TURNSTYLE UNDERGROUND MARKET is a first-of-its-kind retail redevelopment transforming a dark, underwhelming passageway in the Columbus Circle subway station into a vibrant underground marketplace with over 35 retailers and micro-restaurants. With award-winning design by Architecture Outfit, Turnstyle creates a new paradigm for the way New Yorkers and tourists can experience the New York City subway system. Turnstyle has over 22 million annual visitors who shop and gather in what has become the City’s most unique retail corridor. The project has enjoyed overwhelming success since opening in Spring 2016, with expansions planned for other locations throughout New York City and beyond.
The development of Turnstyle presented many unique challenges. Because it is entirely below-grade on land under the control of the Metropolitan Transit Authority (MTA), all plan submissions, approvals, inspections and signoffs were performed by the MTA, not New York's Department of Buildings as is typical for a New York City development. Further, Turnstyle was required to adhere not only to typical code requirements, but to many additional stringent requirements of the MTA due to being located within the subway system. Despite these challenges, Turnstyle has proven that public-private partnerships can be cutting edge as well as successful for all parties. Turnstyle is undoubtedly the coolest and hippest experience that can be found within New York City's subway system.
Cadence co-developed Turnstyle in partnership with Oases Real Estate.
